UI Foundation: Students in Philanthropy Initiative

Are you ready to connect with others in the University of Iowa community interested in giving back? The UI Foundation's Students in Philanthropy Initiative (SPI) is designed to engage UI students, like you, in all aspects of philanthropy.

The SPI project seeks to help students understand how contributors to the UI have enhanced students' experience at Iowa, and it encourages students themselves to become givers, whether of time or resources, while they're here on campus and after graduation.

How does the UI Foundation connect with UI students? Here are just a few of the ways:

We count more than 100 students as valuable part-time employees, in Telefund and in other offices.
A large proportion of the gifts made for the UI each year are designated for scholarships, awards, loan funds, and other student-support resources.
The Foundation often assists with UI colleges' class-gift campaigns.
Presidential Scholarship recipients and other students regularly speak at fund-raising events on the the Foundation's behalf.

We work with people and organizations throughout Iowa and worldwide who give money to make sure you’re getting the best education possible. The tens of thousands of donors who give through the UI Foundation each year care about you and your University.

During the 2006-2007, their gifts added up to more than $87 million—including more than $1 million raised by your fellow students through our Telefund program. Those gifts help students pay for school, provide state-of-the-art buildings and technology, and attract and keep great teachers and researchers at the UI.

For more information on the Students in Philanthropy Initiative, contact: Kristin Loupee Beckman 335-3305 kristin-loupeebeckman@uiowa.edu	more Here are some ways you can get involved: UI Volunteer Fair, a twice-yearly event that brings students into contact with the many volunteer opportunities on campus and in our community, sponsored by the UI's Civic Engagement Program, the 10,000 Hours program, UI Student Government, UI Foundation, and the Office of Student Life. The University of Iowa's Civic Engagement Program (CEP) 10,000 Hours, an initiative begun here at the UI several years ago and now spreading to campuses across the country, encouraging students to donate volunteer time. Dance Marathon, an annual event raising funds to benefit pediatric oncology patients and the UI Children's Hospital. Telefund, offering student employment opportunities here as a Telefund Specialist, helping to raise gifts supporting the UI. Students Today Alumni Tomorrow (STAT) Ambassadors, a group of student representatives of The University of Iowa and the University of Iowa Alumni Association. Welcome Week, which takes place during the first week of classes each fall and welcomes all students (particularly freshmen) back to campus. Corridor Volunteers, outlining volunteer opportunities in the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids area through United Way and CEP.
